Background of Rust Reviews, LLC:
The idea for Rust Reviews dates from 2002. Online customer reviews were starting to appear on the Web, but the few I found were usually written by dissatisfied customers. The websites carrying reviews were doing nothing to help businesses use them or collect them from their most loyal customers. The focus of those websites was to display as many paying business listings as possible -- like online versions of the yellow pages. The few businesses that had several positive reviews truly stood out from the others.
I decided that the best reviews website, from a business and consumer perspective, would be one that made it very easy for customers to leave recommendations and very easy for businesses to update their listings and respond to new recommendations. In 2007, I launched a website that meets those requirements and that website is RustReviews.com.
As I launched that first Rust Reviews website, there was a tremendous increase in the use of social media -- blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Flikr, and so on. There were also powerful, new opportunities for businesses to build a better, more visible Web presence at low cost. Word of mouth content about businesses was growing exponentially on the Web. I’ve researched the best practices for the business use of social media, word of mouth Web content, and search engine optimization and I now offer that knowledge to our clients along with our consulting in business reputation management and business improvement and innovation.
There are word of mouth marketing and buzz marketing consultants, but as far as I know, Rust Reviews is the only consulting/coaching firm offering business management and leadership advice as part of our Web Word of Mouth support to businesses. My name is Paul Sherland, MS, JD, and I’m co-owner of Rust Reviews, LLC and Principal Consultant. I have an unusual and diverse business, government, and military leadership background, plus graduate education in management science and law, that I bring to every consulting relationship.

My management background includes leadership roles in software development, test and evaluation, organizational development and training, and operations research. My education includes a BS from the US Naval Academy, an MS in Operations Research/Systems Analysis from the US Naval Postgraduate School, and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. I’m also an active member of the Virginia State Bar.
Many of the leadership recommendations provided to my clients flow from my service as a helicopter pilot, shipboard department head, and squadron commander in the US Navy. I also served as a Special Assistant on the Secretary of the Navy Staff at the Pentagon.
I flew the Kaman Aircraft Corporation SH-2F Seasprite during multiple tours in Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light Three Four (HSL-34) plus a tour at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VX-1). During my Navy service, I served aboard USS America (CVA-66), USS Moinester (FF-1097), USS Wainwright (CG-28), and USS Inchon (LPH-12). The tour aboard Inchon as Operations Officer was my last one in the Navy, and we deployed to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and the Caribbean during my two and a half years aboard the ship.
